Women of Distinction
Girl Scouting exists because our community has girls who need support. Girls face many serious threats, including issues of self worth, childhood obesity, bullying, teen pregnancy and substance abuse. Obviously, no single organization can solve all the problems or meet all the needs, but Girl Scouting is committed to speaking out for and helping girls become responsible members of our community through values-based programming.
Mountains to Midlands identifies exceptional women in our community who have role modeled the positive values expressed in our Girl Scout Promise and Law. Each April, these Women of Distinction are honored at a gala held in Columbia, SC.
First launched in 1993 by one of Mountains to Midlands’ legacy councils, Girl Scout Council of the Congaree Area, the annual Women of Distinction Awards Dinner is a unique event that celebrates the outstanding accomplishments these women have made through family, career and community service. One of the highlights of the dinner is a video presentation in which honorees have the opportunity to share their contributions toward improving the quality of life in our community.
The achievements and visibility of these women set a powerful example for girls and young women in Mountains to Midlands’ 22-county service area. For information on nominating a Woman of Distinction, attending the awards dinner, or sponsoring the event, contact our Development Department toll free at 800.849.4475.
The 2008 honorees were:
Patty Patterson, Chief of Police, City of Sumter – Sumter, SC
Sarah Shuptrine, Founder of The Southern Institute on Children and Families – Columbia, SC
Donna Sorensen, First Lady of the University of South Carolina – Columbia, SC
Linda C. Stern, lifelong civic volunteer and patron of the arts – Columbia, SC
