Our AmeriCorps project, Girl Scouts Reach Out: A Troop Start-up Initiative,
partners AmeriCorps Members/Volunteers with our council's Community Development Managers to
establish troops and secure the commitment of volunteers to assist in troop leadership
responsibilities. AmeriCorps Members/Volunteers will be able to organize and lead the initial
troop meetings. While assuring that the volunteers have the tools and support needed, they
will shift more and more responsibilities to the volunteers to provide the girls in the
troop with a fun and exciting Leadership Journey. The purpose of this initiative is to
create sustainability by recruiting volunteers and providing them with the tools and
experiences to become confident leaders. Through this experience the leaders will feel a deeper
connection to the mission of Girl Scouting and continue well after their initial 10-session
experience has concluded.
Participation by AmeriCorps Members/Volunteers will serve as an extension of current services to
areas where more specialized attention is needed to be successful. They will be an essential
part of reaching into communities we do not currently have the capacity to reach. As we
expand our membership, community presence and visibility, we will be able to attract more
adult volunteers and grow exponentially.
The 16 counties identified to benefit from the 11 full-time AmeriCorps Members/Volunteers are
Abbeville, Aiken, Cherokee, Chester, Edgefield, Fairfield, Greenville, Greenwood, Laurens, Lexington, McCormick,
Newberry, Richland, Saluda, Spartanburg and Union counties.
